"Azores - Autonomy and Europe" contest selected teams to participate in Europe Day celebrations
The teams that will represent the Azores in Europe Day celebrations to be held on the island of São Jorge on May 9 have already been selected through the contest "Azores - Autonomy and Europe 1976/1986/2016."
Launched earlier this year, this multimedia work contest featured the participation of 11 teams from 10 secondary and vocational training schools, whose works were evaluated taking into account their originality, creativity, visual and communicative impact, and content accuracy.
The selected teams are: "Eurocorvos," made up of students Ana Pimentel, João Estevão and Paulo Reis from Mouzinho da Silveira Basic Education and Secondary School on Corvo Island; "As Azáleas," composed of students Ana Vanessa Sousa, Catarina Nunes and Teresa Moreira from Flores Basic Education and Secondary School; "Os Arriagas," which includes students Joana Castro, José Rodrigo Freitas and Manuel Silva from Manuel de Arriaga Secondary School on Faial Island; "Os Picarotos," composed of students André Serpa, Carolina Simas and Mariana Raposo from São Roque do Pico Basic Eduction.
The contest also selected the following teams: "Euroaçor," consisting of students Luís Silva, Tiago Nunes and Diana Brasil from Calheta Basic Education and Secondary School on São Jorge Island; "Eurocêntricos," composed of students Sofia Silva, Simão Silva and Rui Silva from Graciosa Basic Education and Secondary School; "Os Turistas," made up of students Catarina Valadão, Francisca Aguiar and Gonçalo Vieira from Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Angra do Heroísmo Vocational Training School on Terceira Island; "Três ao Quadrado" composed of students Eliana Lopes, Henrique Moura and Cátia Novo from Santa Maria Basic Education and Secondary School.
These teams will take part in the Europe Day celebrations to be held at Velas Basic Education and Secondary School on May 9. They will also compete in the final contest "Europe Quiz - The Azores and the European Union." The prize includes a trip to the winners and several prizes for the second and third places as well as for all participants.
The jury has selected the best works to represent each island of the Azores in Europe Day celebrations. It had as guest members Berta Miúdo, professor at the University of the Azores, and teacher José Carlos Pereira, coordinator of the European Club of Água de Pau Basic Education School.
The Government of the Azores, through this initiative, challenged the young Azoreans to reflect on the 40th anniversary of Autonomy and the 30th anniversary of the accession of Portugal to the European Community as well as on what has changed in the Azores in these four decades: the meaning of Autonomy and the Region's participation in Europe, benefits, goals to be achieved, the future of Autonomy and the integration of the Azores in Europe.
In addition to selecting the finalists, the jury chose the best work of the contest "Azores - Autonomy and Europe 1976/1986/2016" and decided to award two honourable mentions that will be announced during the Europe Day celebrations.
