Government of the Azores promotes contest on Europe Day

This year, the Regional Government promotes the 7th edition of the Europe Day contest under the theme "Act, React, Impact: European Elections 2014." The initiative is addressed at students attending secondary and vocational training schools in the Azores.

The application period run until April 17.  Each team will be composed of three students and a teacher in charge. Students must submit original and creative works in any media format (audio and/or image) with a maximum duration of 3 minutes.

This year's edition will address the information campaign on the elections for the European Parliament to be held in May with the aim of promoting a reflection on the current status of the European Union and the importance of active citizenship in the future of the European project.

This contest is intended to challenge Azorean students to reflect on the relevance of Europe to the Azores and express their views on how can EU institutions, in particular the European Parliament, may respond to current and emerging issues concerning youth and citizens.

The nine best works - one for each island - will select the nine finalist teams that will participate in the celebrations of Europe Day to be held on Pico this year.

In this context of several recreational and training activities on the European Union to mark this date, this initiative will bring together youngsters from across the archipelago, who will take part in the contest "Europe Quiz - The Azores and the European Union" on May 9.

The winners will win a trip to Brussels which includes visits to EU institutions. Prizes will also be awarded to the teams placed in second and third as well as to the best multimedia work.

This contest is open to the participation of all youngsters up to 20 years attending 10th, 11th and 12th forms at secondary schools throughout the archipelago as well as to junior high school students from Corvo Basic Education School and the equivalent levels at vocational training schools; there is no limit in the number of teams representing each school.

Works must be submitted on CD/DVD format to the Office of the Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations at Rua Prof. Alfredo Bensaúde, nº 6 r/c, 9500-700 Ponta Delgada.

The rules and further information on the contest "European Citizenship - An Azorean Perspective" will be available at all secondary and vocational training schools in the archipelago and on the Portal of the Government.
