Ponta Delgada ,  July 21, 2016

Rodrigo Oliveira highlights creation of Network of Youth Ambassadors of the Azores in the Diaspora

The Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations stressed in Ponta Delgada the role played by young people from the Azorean Diaspora in strengthening ties and bringing the Azores closer to their emigrant communities.

Rodrigo Oliveira spoke on the sidelines of the closing session of the "Azores 2016 Training for young people from Azorean Diaspora," an initiative promoted by the Regional Directorate for Communities. The government stressed that the participants from Canada, USA, Brazil, Uruguay, Bermuda and Mainland Portugal continental "belong to a generation that already works and, despite not being born in the Azores, already feels the call and the flame of 'Azoreanity'."

In this context, the Regional Secretary stressed that the goal of participants during this training was "to learn and better understand the Azores of today so that they can take to their communities what they saw and they know about the Region."

"On our part, the Azorean Government could not be more pleased," said Rodrigo Oliveira. According to him, "the most important aspect was to note that these young people are even more determined and committed to continue with this mission to bring a little of the Azores to their community." The government official "praised the decision presented during the conclusion of this training course towards the creation of the Network of Youth Ambassadors of the Azores in the Diaspora.

For the Regional Under Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, "these young ambassadors will now expand their knowledge to their communities in order to create synergies and identify common interests in various areas, so that they can strengthen this connection to the Azores and maintain the Region closer to its communities."

The "Azores 2016 Training for young people from Azorean Diaspora" started on July 15 and was held on the islands of Terceira, Graciosa, Santa Maria and São Miguel. The initiative falls within the Government's policy to create synergies between the Region and the Diaspora by promoting the ties of young people of Azorean descent with the Azores and encouraging their participation in the associations of the communities where they reside.
