The Government of the Azores has already concluded the project for the construction of a cargo terminal at the Lajes Airport and is currently awaiting its analysis and mandatory report of the Portuguese Air Force, the entity to which this project was submitted last June.
For the Regional Secretary for the Economy, Vasco Cordeiro, it is "an intervention of great importance to the island of Terceira as it will reinforce the processing capacity of goods, with special emphasis on a very substantial improvement in operating conditions of the companies in the exports sector.”
According to the project submitted to the Portuguese Air Force, the future cargo terminal to be built at the Lajes Airport will have an area of approximately 1500 m2, of which 290 m2 will be assigned to import activities and 410 m2 to export activities. It will also be equipped with a cold storage area.
In addition to the project for installing the cargo terminal, the Government of the Azores will also award the contract work for the construction of the final phase of the car park at the Lajes civil terminal by November.
One should remind that the new car park, which encompasses four autonomous parks, linked by new streets, has a capacity for over 494 seats, of which 122 are designed for rent-a-car vehicles, hence providing better conditions to all rent-a-car companies operating in the Lajes Civil Air Terminal.
With these changes, it will be no longer mandatory to skirt around the car park next to the air terminal building as two turntables have been installed, which will smooth traffic flow.
For the Regional Secretary for the Economy, "this is a work of great relevance as it will improve road and parking conditions for all those travelling to that area in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, without forgetting that it is also the first city landmark for those who travel to Terceira Island by air.”
