The nine islands of the Azores are considered young in terms geological time scale. They are considered far away in terms of exchanges and biological isolation and contemporary in terms of human settlement. Time evolution, volcanological phenomena, scenarios resulting from the strong erosion of natural elements and, lastly, the different requirement standards for the use of space, types of construction, exchange or isolation in terms of culture and society, have turned these nine islands into nine different human, natural and artistic ecosystems.

In this context and, the competences assigned to the Regional Directorate for the Environment comprise its responsibilities regarding Nature Conservation, which includes the management of protected areas, species and habitats under the Natura 2000 Network, and Environmental Quality, with special emphasis on the management and supervision of noise, air quality and waste. The different aspects of Environmental Promotion and Education are other important responsibilities assigned to this department.
