The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, joins the European Mobility Week with actions on the island of Flores on 20 September and on the islands of São Jorge, Graciosa and Santa Maria on September 22.
The Municipal Council of Lajes das Flores, in partnership with the Island Natural Park, will organise games at the elderly living in that municipality, raising their awareness for the importance of more sustainable and healthy habits, such as the reduction of engine-powered vehicles.
On São Jorge, the Natural Park promotes a pedestrian route between Serra do Topo and Fajã dos Cubres to disseminate the local bio and geodiversity as well as to promote hiking instead of fossil fuel consumption.
The initiative is addressed to the local community and the recommended minimum age for participants is six years.
The Graciosa Natural Park and the local Sports Services, in partnership with Ilha Branca School Sports Club, will organise a bike ride along the Caldeira Trail. This is an initiative open to the whole community with the aim of alerting people to the need of changing behaviours regarding sustainable mobility.
The Santa Maria Natural Park will organise the Mobility Games outside its premises. The activity will encourage the practice of physical exercise, reflecting on the daily habits that may be altered to reduce atmospheric and noise pollution emissions.
The activities carried out under this initiative are intended to raise the awareness of participants for the use of alternative vehicles to the cars to promote the conservation and preservation of natural resources.
Those who are interested may obtain further information about these and other activities promoted by the Azores Natural Parks at http://educarparaoambiente.azores.gov.pt.
Launched in Brussels on April 19, 2002, the European Mobility Week runs from September 16 to 22. Under this campaign, citizens will have the opportunity to participate in various activities dedicated to sustainable mobility to encourage a new vision on the need to adopt behaviours regarding mobility, particularly in the use of cars.
