Efficient selective collection reduces amount of waste for disposal, says Hernâni Jorge
The Regional Environment Director for the Environment stated today that the entry into operation of the Pico Waste Processing Centre is fundamental to "implement an efficient selective collection," which will allow the recovery of waste and "the significant reduction of the amount of waste for disposal."
The Regional Director spoke in Lajes do Pico on the sidelines of an initiative that marked the beginning of the "Recycling Mission," a campaign developed by the Secretariat for Agriculture and Environment, with the support of the Green Dot Society (Sociedade Ponto Verde). It will include the door to door distribution of 4,500 domestic recycling containers on the island of Pico and a brochure containing information on waste separation.
In addition to providing domestic recycling containers, Hernâni Jorge stressed that this campaign aims to raise the awareness of the population for the importance of waste separation and recycling as well as to provide information on how the separation and the respective deposition in municipal selective collection containers should be done.
The campaign started today in the three municipalities of Pico with the collaboration of town halls and village councils. This initiative will also allow the collection of data, through the conduction of a survey on the recycling habits and attitudes of households.
