The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, promotes a planting ceremony of a Kaki tree, under the “Revive Time: Kaki Tree” project, at Faial Botanical Garden next Friday, March 31.
The planting of a Kaki tree aims to celebrate life; it will be carried out by students attending António José de Ávila Elementary and Middle School. The "Revive Time" project is intended to plant the seeds of art and peace in the hearts of thousands of children with the growth of persimmon roots, which will also take this spring in the Azores.
This is the first time that a peace tree - a symbol of life and resilience - is planted in the Atlantic archipelago at a ceremony to be attended by the main drivers of the "Revive Time: Kaki Tree Project."
This project was founded in 1996 by botanist Masayuki Ebinuma and artist Tatsuo Miyajima as a way of acknowledging the symbolism of the survival of a tree to one of the greatest tragedies in human history.
It is a persimmon (Diospyros kaki) descending from of one of the few trees that survived the atomic bomb launched by the United States in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945.
In 2016, following the suggestion of marine biologist Verónica Neves, the Faial Botanical Garden applied to the project. This year, it was one of the 15 places in the world selected to receive a small Kaki tree.
The Regional Directorate for the Environment invites all people to know this magnificent tree and celebrate the importance of peace and life on March 31 from 9:30 AM to 5 PM and April 1 between 2 and 5 PM.
