The Regional Directorate for the Environment will promote the Colloquium on “The state of knowledge of the Azores Wood Pigeon” at the House of Volcanoes on the island of Pico on July 26.
This colloquium intends to present the conclusions of the study on this species, which has been conducted for this regional department since 2012 by CIBIO - Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.
The event will also feature the presentation of a summary of the activities carried out between 2012 and 2018 as well as of the evolution of the species (morphological and genetic differentiation), the reproductive biology, the impact on vineyards and the annual monitoring of abundance throughout the archipelago.
In promoting these studies, the Regional Directorate for the Environment aims not only to ensure the improvement of the conservation status of the Azores wood pigeon, acquiring knowledge on its reproductive biology and abundance in the Region, but also to assess the impact of this protected species on wine production on the island of Pico.
