The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, promotes the 8th Azores Waste Week from November 18 to 26, 2017. Organised under the 9th European Week for Waste Reduction, this initiative includes several actions organised by various public and private entities on all islands.
Any entity interested in promoting awareness-raising and information actions and activities for prevention and management of waste, under the theme "Reusing & Recovering: Give a new life!," may register as a Promoter of Action of the Waste Week until November 12, through the form available on the registration platform at http://www.ewwr.eu/register.
The initiative is open to entities that fall into the following categories: Administration/Public Authority; Association/NGO; Company/Industry; School Establishment; Individuals; Other (hospital, nursing home, cultural institution, etc.).
The actions to be carried out within the Azores Waste Week are intended to raise awareness and inform about the correct management of waste on each island as well as to disseminate the different types of waste processing and the appropriate destination. They are primarily focused on prevention towards the reduction of waste production.
European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is an international initiative aimed at implementing, for a week, awareness-raising actions on the sustainable management of resources and waste, in order to change the behaviour of European citizens with regard to their consumption habits.
The Regional Directorate for the Environment is the coordinating entity of the European Week in the Azores. In the 2016 edition, 123 actions were promoted throughout the archipelago, involving 68 entities.
In 2016, the Azores were the second region of the country where more actions were carried out; Portugal ranked 5th among the 32 participating countries.
