The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, promotes the 7th Azores Waste Week between November 19 and 27 as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction. This initiative includes actions organised by public and private entities on all islands with the aim of raising awareness and inform people on proper waste management at island level. Moreover, they are also intended to provide information on the appropriate destinations for waste produced in the archipelago as well as on waste prevention to minimise its daily production.
There will be 126 awareness-raising actions, organised by 68 entities, and the promotion of several partnerships with various entities: Government, local authorities, private companies, management companies and waste operators, school establishments, associations and non-governmental environmental organisations, health facilities, "casas do povo" and "Santa Casa da Misericórdia."
The planned initiatives include two actions with regional scope while the remaining will take place on the islands of São Miguel (29), Terceira (24), Pico (20), Faial (17), Santa Maria (11), Flores (10), Graciosa (7), Corvo (6) and São Jorge (2). There is an increase in the number of initiative compared to last year's edition, when there were 98 actions organised in the Azores.
This week, in Europe, the actions will be developed in accordance with the European theme for 2016, which aims to promote the reduction of packaging waste, raising the awareness of the population for sustainable consumption and promotion of environmental awareness that will result in day-to- day attitudes towards the prevention of waste generation.
