World Environment Day celebrated on all islands with alerts for plastic pollution
The Regional Secretariat for Energy, Environment and Tourism, through the Regional Directorate for the Environment, promotes today a series of actions for the cleaning of streams on all the islands of the Azores to mark the World Environment Day. This year's edition is focused on the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution."
This initiative is carried out in partnership with the villages that have applied for "My Stream" project. It intends to raise awareness for the importance of preventing the disposal of materials and waste in water lines as well as for the problems stemming from plastic waste production. Besides, the activity will draw attention to the consequences of its disposal in the natural environment, such as the case of water lines, where it easily reaches the sea.
The World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5, the date set by the UN General Assembly in 1972. It has become a privileged means to promote global awareness for environmental issues.
In parallel to the celebrations of the World Environment Day, the Regional Directorate for the Environment has joined the European Sustainable Development Week, which started on May 30 and ends today.
Supported by the European Network for Development, this initiative aims to stimulate and give visibility to activities, projects and events promoting sustainable development.
In the context of the European Sustainable Development Week, Natural Parks have promoted a dozen activities, mainly aimed at the school public.
