Azores selected by European Commission as one of the leading regions in energy transition
The Azores were selected by the European Commission from more than 2,200 islands and archipelagos to join the "Clean Energy for EU Islands" initiative to develop and present their agenda for the energy transition under this European initiative by the summer of 2020.
The Azorean Government, transposing the European vision for the sector to the Region, has already begun to develop the Azorean Strategy for Energy 2030 (EAE 2030). It will be designed to endow the archipelago with public policies capable of responding to the needs of an insular and outermost archipelago, while exploiting the potential of natural resources and emerging technologies in the energy sector.
With the integration of the archipelago into the "Clean Energy for EU Islands," the Azorean Government will now count on the support of the Commission. This is an important validation factor that raises the Region to a prominent position in Brussels and consolidates its international recognition as a true "living laboratory"' for the testing of innovative solutions applicable on the remaining European islands.
"Clean Energy for the EU" is one of the most important initiatives of the European Commission, which delegates to the islands the leadership in the implementation of the European vision of clean, safe and competitive energy, accessible to all.
In a total of 26 pioneering regions, the Azores were selected to join the initiative for their potential to meet the European Commission's goals, given their commitment to this area, the efforts undertaken in Brussels and the excellent results already demonstrated as leading Region in the energy transition.
