Landfill for construction and demolition waste and sealing of dump on Corvo Island evidence Regional Government's commitment to sustainable waste management
The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stated that the construction of the landfill for construction and demolition waste as well as the sealing of dump on Corvo Island are example of the Regional Government's commitment to an increasingly sustainable waste management.
"The 400 thousand-Euro investment included, besides the construction of the landfill for construction and demolition waste, the sealing of the old dump. The latter solved the problem of environmental liabilities and promoted the landscape redevelopment of that space," said Marta Guerreiro.
The Secretary for the Environment spoke at the opening of this landfill during the Government's visit to Corvo. She stressed that the sealing and landscape recovery of the dump comprised, from the beginning, the construction of a landfill for non-dangerous inert waste that "cannot recycled or reused in other works on the island."
"From now on, Corvo will be provided with a series of infrastructures suitable for the management of most waste generated on the island, taking another step towards the effective sustainability of the first Azorean Biosphere Reserve," said the government official.
In 2015, "90% of the construction and demolition waste produced in the Azores was sent for recovery and only 10% was eliminated," revealed Marta Cordeiro
In her speech, the Regional Secretary recalled that the Regional Government "promoted the construction and equipment of Waste Processing Centres on the seven least populated islands, an overall investment of 38 million Euros. The sealing works and the environmental and landscape recovery of dumps on six islands involved an investment of six million Euros.
"Recently, the Azoreans saw a profound change in this sector through the implementation of one of the most important structural reforms in our Region," said the government official.
"Last year, 49% of the waste produced was recovered through the Azores urban waste management system, namely through material recovery (which has achieved the best ever record), organic recovery and energy recovery," added Marta Guerreiro.
