The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stressed today that the island of Terceira “registers one of the highest relative increases regarding the number of beds,” noting that there was an increase of 142% between 2012 and 2019, compared with the 126% increase recorded at regional level.
“More than growing in terms of quantity, the challenge is to improve the quality of the destination,” Marta Guerreiro stressed, highlighting that entrepreneurs are aligned with the Government's strategy, “presenting high-quality projects.”
Marta Guerreiro spoke in Angra do Heroísmo at the end of a visit to the "Casa de São João" tourism project, which is in the final phase of construction, considering that it is “another example of the improvement of Terceira's tourism offer."
"These four-star tourist apartments consist of four accommodation units with a total of 31 beds, thus improving the tourism offer in a city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site," stressed the government official.
According to her, “it is this type of project that Azorean tourism also needs as far as they promote the recovery of property in urban centres, while remodelling them according to contemporary concepts to offer comfort and tranquillity as key elements."
Marta Guerreiro pointed out this is another evidence that the tourism sector has been consolidating itself "as one of the driving forces in the development of the Azores. It plays an increasingly important role in the Region's economy, not only in terms of income but also in terms of the employment creation and entrepreneurship opportunities. Moreover, this project also demonstrates the confidence of Terceira's entrepreneurs in the good prospects for the tourism sector arising from the recently announced air links.
