Miosótis Award example of the commitment to sustainable tourism, says Marta Guerreiro
The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism highlighted today the "Miosótis" award as an example of the commitment made by the Regional Government regarding sustainability issues, promoting a close relation between the environment and tourism.
"This intention of the Regional Government also arose from the need to create a credible and rigorous environmental mark to be assigned to accommodation units, recognising their good practices. It also aims to raise the awareness of workers and costumers for the widespread use of these good environmental practices," said Marta Guerreiro. The government official spoke in Horta at the delivery ceremony of the awards to two tourism projects, which are part of a group of 21 distinguished accommodations.
Created in 2012, the "Miosótis" award confers various levels of recognition to regional tourism accommodation units for their good environmental behaviour, implemented in different areas, namely in resource saving, correct waste management and local promotion.
"As this is a totally free process, both for registration and renewal, and the award is valid for a period of two years, we challenge all regional tourist accommodations to recognise themselves in this vision and be part of this extended of examples of good practices," said Marta Guerreiro.
In her speech, the government official stressed that that the projection of the Azores in recent years in the context of sustainable tourism "has led to an increase in the number of visitors, while redoubling need to maintain and update the standards regarded as sustainable in this sector."
