The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism stated on São Miguel Island that the Regional Government will once again support the Azores Airlines Pro surfing event.
"We signed today the contract-programme with the Atlantic Action Sports association for the allocation of 250 thousand Euros to ensure the continuation of one of the most relevant sporting events held in the Azores, in this specific case, on São Miguel Island and in the city of Ribeira Grande," said Marta Guerreiro.
The government official spoke at the signing of the contract-programme. On the occasion, she mentioned that "this event has been promoting the Azores destination in recent years through the promotion of a tourism product of considerable relevance in the archipelago, such as is the case of surf."
"Additionally, this is another way of structuring and improving the regional tourism offer and, for that reason, the Regional Government will remain on the side of its promoters" said the government official.
The Secretary for Tourism added that "the Azores Airlines Pro has been favourably positioning the Region in important markets as well as in segments that value the direct contact with nature and people."
"The Government of the Azores recognises the importance of international events such as this one as they highlight the Region as a privileged location for the practice of wave sports, whether through surfing or bodyboarding," stated the government official.
Marta Guerreiro pointed out that "wave sports are a priority product, being duly highlighted in the Strategic and Marketing Plan for Tourism Development in the Azores. Hence, these events have been a success for their promotional potential, projecting the Azores as an Active Nature Destination and as unique place for surfing activities."
