Angra do Heroísmo ,  July 23, 2014

Angra do Heroísmo Museum promotes exhibition on fish species

The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum (MAH), will organise next weekend, July 26-27, an event under the programme to disseminate the underwater photography exhibition by Nuno Sá; the latter will be open to the public until October at the churchyard of Nossa Senhora da Guia Church and at the Chapter Room.

The second edition of the activity dedicated to Fish species will be held at the Angra do Heroísmo Museum on Saturday, July 26. The activity include the presentation of a paper by marine biologist at the Azores Sea Observatory, Carla Dâmaso, and a tasting of sushi prepared with fish caught in Azorean waters.

On the same day, Carla Dâmaso will deliver a conference on "Jewfishes, sperm whales, blue sharks and other friendly (un)known species" at the Museum's auditorium at 8:30 PM. The event, with free admission, will address the habits and characteristics of some of the most common marine species with the aim of making them easily identifiable by the public in general.

The tasting, organised in partnership with Peixaria Silveira (establishment that sells fish), Cardomono and snack-bar Cristovão, requires previous registration until July 24, through the telephone number 295 240 800 or the email [email protected].

On Sunday, July 27, the Angra do Heroísmo Museum will go out to the sea as it did last year. This year's edition will include a boat ride from Angra do Heroísmo bay to Serreta Lighthouse, with a stop in São Mateus fishing port for a visit to the House of Whaling Boats.

Held under the title "Alabote," the initiative will count on the participation of marine biologist Carla Dâmaso, who will address the variety of marine species in the Azores and the impact of the techniques used to capture them. Vítor Freitas, fisher, will be also on board to give his testimony on the concerns and the experiences of a life at sea.

Registrations for the tour on the boat Aguiartur will be open until July 25, through the same telephone number and email address; the activity is limited to 50 passengers. The price is set at 25 € for adults and at 20 € for children up to the age of 12.

With these initiatives, the Angra do Heroísmo Museum fulfils its purpose of providing a recreational and educational complement to the exhibitions that are currently open to the public in order to better serve the community and renew the traditional approach to attract new audiences.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
