The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Public Library and Regional Archive, opens an exhibition of Azorean bookplates at the atrium and reserved book room of Bettencourt Palace next Thursday, March 19, at 5 PM.
The exhibition will be open to the public until April 17. It brings together over two hundred bookplates used by Azorean citizens from the earliest days to present day, most of which come from the private collection of Jácome de Bruges Bettencourt, who is also the commissioner of the exhibition.
Today, this practice has lost some force. It was intended to mark a book with the identification of its owner, without damaging it, thus adding value to the book because, in many cases, the bookplate was the result of a careful work of an artist.
The exhibition is admission-free and will be open from Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 7 PM and on Saturdays from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events are available for consultation at the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the electronic address www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
