Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre in Ribeira Grande, under the coordination of the Regional Directorate for Culture, promotes in July several initiatives, including guided tours, meetings with artists, shows, exhibitions, theatre and a literary residence.
Next month's schedule begins with a second guided tour to the "Same Hands" cycle, which takes place on July 1, and to the "Untitled V (Peregrine) 2011" sculpture by Daniel Oliveira at São José Church in Ponta Delgada at 10:30 AM.
Throughout the month, the work by the same author, entitled "Untitled VI, 2011, which belongs to Arquipélago's collection," will be on display at the Contemporary Arts Centre.
The initiative "Folding Symmetries" will be on July 2 and proposes a meeting with artist Catarina Branco.
Participants in this event, promoted by the Educational Service, will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition entitled “Catarina Branco" on a guided tour conducted by the artist, and then, having her work as starting point, will put into practice the techniques she uses.
Arquipélago also organises in July some events in partnership with the Walk & Talk Festival, which aims to involve artists and the local community.
In this context, it will host the projects of Francisca Manuel and the Japanese artist Akane Moriyama as well as that of choreographer Vânia Rovisco, who will be in residence at Arquipélago between July 4 and 14.
During this residence, the Contemporary Arts Centre promotes the masterclass "We are the foundations" with Vânia Rovisco on July between 2:30 and 5:30 PM. This will be a meeting where all people can share body language.
This residence will culminate with the show "Equanimidade - Unchangeable Spirits" on July 28 at Teatro Micaelense in Ponta Delgada.
Also on July 8, Arquipélago hosts PLIP - Red Cloud Puppet Theatre at 6 PM. This is a puppet theatre show for children, spoken in the imaginary language of the planet Plip.
Included in the programming of Disquiet - International Literary Programme, which organises this year for the first time a literary residence on S. Miguel, the Contemporary Arts Centre will hold a session with Jeffery Renard Allen, writer coordinator of the residence, Leonor Sampaio da Silva and João Pedro Porto on July 11 at 6 PM.
This talk and reading session will feature the remaining 14 writers participating in the project and will be open to the public.
On July 23, the Educational Service promotes the activity "Paper Eruption - Pico Queimado Trail" in partnership with Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Centre and with the collaboration of Urban Sketchers.
Regarding the eruption that occurred in July 1563, this trail will be guided through history, geology and biology explanations about Pico Queimado. Participants will be invited to record the different moments of this tour, through drawings.
July 23 will be also the last to visit the "Catarina Branco" exhibition, which has been open to the public at the Contemporary Arts Centre since April 29.
Moreover, the recently inaugurated facilities "Zoe: Actant" by Hugo Paquete and "Map of Life" by Ana Nobre, resulting from the artistic residence "Salutem: à tua saúde," may be visited at Arquipélago until September 3.
The exhibition entitled "Liquid Time - A dialogue of videos of Maria & Armando Cabral Collection collections and Cal Cego," curated by Carolina Grau, closes on July 28 with the launch of the Catalogue.
On the same day, the project developed by Patricia Dauder, one of the artists of the artistic residence "Terra Incógnita," will be open. In turn, the projects of João Gigante and Mauro Cerqueira, resulting from the same residence, which took place in the islands of Flores, Terceira and São Miguel, will open on August 6.
