The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, promotes four concerts between September 16 and 18 on the weekend dedicated to orchestras, an event organised under the Artistic Season 2016.
On Friday, September 16, the Teatro Micaelense hosts a concert by Sinfonietta de Ponta Delgada, a professional orchestral project developed by Quadrivium - Arts Association; it begins at 9:30 PM.
This concert, directed by maestro Amâncio Cabral, intends to promote young Azorean musicians in the areas of composition and performance as well as to disseminate symphonic repertoire.
It features the solo performance of viola player Amadeu de Resendes, who will play the "Concert in D Major" by Stamitz; the latter being a fundamental work of the repertoire for viola. In turn, Sara Ross will present "Estados," a work commissioned by Quadrivium for the Artistic Season 2016. The concert will end with Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony."
On 17 September, ECA – Ensemble Contemporâneo dos Açores will perform a concert at the Main Hall of Madelena Town Hall at 9 PM. On the following day, the same concert will be held on São Jorge Island at Velas Municipal Auditorium at 9:30. This ensemble aims to disseminate, promote and explain contemporary music to regional audiences.
Under the artistic direction of Marco Torre and the narration of actor Nelson Cabral, these concerts present as main work the "Soldier's Tale" by Igor Stravinsky. It is based on a Russian folk tale and tells the story of soldier returning home and his encounter with the devil, who wants to take possession of his soul.
These concerts also feature the premiere of the overture for the "Soldier's Tale" by Antero Ávila.
Also on Saturday, September 17, the Nordeste Cultural Activities Centre hosts a concert by Esmúsica.rp orchestra of Rabo de Peixe Music School at 9:30 PM. This project is based on a musical training model intertwined with social intervention that is intended to bring culture, arts and music to young people in Rabo de Peixe, always in a perspective of personal fulfilment.
The Esmúsica.rp orchestra is composed of students and teachers, who develop together an approach to jazz language and go on a journey through sound exploration and perception of various musical aesthetic movements, creating spaces for creativity and improvisation.
Besides "Soundpainting/Conduction," which will be a composition in real time, Esmúsica.rp will also perform several popular themes, such as “Oye como va” by Tito Puente and "Ilhas de Bruma" by Manuel Medeiros Ferreira.
