Azores and Canaries promote artist exchange through Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre
Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre in Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island, and La Regenta Art Centre in Las Palmas, Canaries, have established a partnership to promote the exchange of artists from the two Macaronesian archipelagos.
The Regional Directorate for Culture, through Arquipélago, aims to create and disseminate contemporary art and culture with the organisation of Artistic Residencies, one of its most important components. Moreover, this initiative also intends to encourage collaboration with public and private entities, both national and foreign, in order to establish networks, partnerships and the internationalisation of national artists.
The protocol signed between the Regional Directorate for Culture of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, through Arquipélago - Contemporary Arts Centre, and La Regenta Art Centre promote the exchange of artists from the both Atlantic archipelagos in Artistic Residency projects. The final works will be displayed in an exhibition to be held in each of these artistic spaces.
In this context, Azorean artist Sofia Caetano is conducting an Artistic Residency at La Regenta Art Centre until May 31, creating a video installation that will be screened on mylar acrylic painting.
The video is based on the reappropriation/research/re-release of four 16mm films from the 1960s and 1970s: "Oasis," "The Beginnings of Exploration," "Birds, Baboons and other animals of Africa" and "Help."
Sofia Caetano graduated in Fine Arts - Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. She studied film direction at RESTART and photography at the Portuguese Institute of Photography, having completed her Master of Fine Arts degree in Media Art at the Emerson College in Boston, USA.
A native of São Miguel, this artist founded The Spectacular House production company together with Elliot Sheedy. She won the Regional Government's Artistic Creation Grant in 2016 and was one of the five finalists of the Sonae Media Art Prize, an initiative of Sonae and the National Museum of Contemporary Art - Chiado Museum.
