The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, promotes the participation of the Azores in the 86th Lisbon Book Fair, an initiative sponsored by the Portuguese Association of Publishers and Bookseller that will take place at Eduardo VII Park from May 26 to June 13.
The presence of the Azores in this important event, which is expected to receive around half a million visitors, will be highlighted on June 4 and 5. On these days, the cultural programming of the Regional Directorate for Culture includes the launch of the books and the organisation musical events linked to the Azores.
On June 4, João Teles e Cunha will present the second volume of "Obras Completas de Maria Olímpia da Rocha Gil, O Arquipélago dos Açores no Século XVII: Aspectos Sócio-Económicos" at the APEL auditorium at 8 PM. The session will be attended by the Regional Secretary for Education and Culture, Avelino Meneses, and the coordinator of the publication, Artur Teodoro de Matos.
Later, there will be a concert by musician João da Ilha featuring accordionist Nuno Carpinteiro at Praça Laranja at 10 PM.
On next day, at 7 PM, Nuno Costa Santos will present the launch of the books "Onde sequer o Luar," by Leonardo Sousa and "O Ciclone e a Ilha" by Fraga Goulart at APEL Auditorium. These books make up volumes 4 and 5 of the LABJOVEM literary collection that is published by the Regional Directorate for Culture and is the result of the evaluation of the jury of Young Creators of the Azores Competition; the latter is project developed by the Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Youth.
Also on this day, singer Sara Cruz will perform at Praça Laranja at 8:30 PM.
The main purpose of the Azorean participation is to disseminate works by Azorean authors or that address Azorean themes. There are several publishers represented at the Azores Culture Pavilion.
In addition to the Regional Directorate for Culture, this pavilion, which occupies three stands, this pavilion features several entities: Amigos dos Açores − Ecological Association, Montanheiros Association, Azorina - Society for Environmental Management and Nature Conservation, Regional Centre for Handicrafts, Companhia das Ilhas, Geotrota, Azorean Institute of Culture, Cultural Institute of Ponta Delgada, Historical Institute of Terceira Island and Jorge Barros, Produções Audiovisuais.
The municipalities of Angra do Heroísmo, Horta and Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Horta Cultural Centre, OMA -Azores Sea Observatory, Publiçor, Publiçor, Afonso de Chaves Society, Turiscom - Turismo, Azores Tourism, University of the Azores, Ver Açor and Yolanda Corsépius are also present in this pavilion.
The publications of publishers represented at the event may be purchased at a discount of 20% while the publication of the Regional Directorate for Culture will have a discount of 30%.
In addition to this significant decrease in the public sale price, the Azores Culture Pavilion will select the "Book of the Day" on a daily basis as well as a book on sale; both have a 50% discount.
The books of the day and the books on sales at the Book Fair will be extended to the shops of the Regional Directorate for Culture, the museums of the Regional Network of Azorean Museums, Public Libraries and Regional Archives of Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada, Horta as well as to Aquipélago -Contemporary Arts Centre and the virtual library.
The selected works for "Book of the Day" are as follows: "Emanuel Félix – Obra Completa" in three volumes, the albums "Palácio dos Capitães-Generais" and "A fotografia nos Açores" and the catalogues "Paulo Gouveia: A reinvenção do vernáculo," "Natália Correia: A feiticeira cotovia" or "Ana Vieira: Muros de abrigo/Shelter walls." These catalogues revisit some of the most relevant exhibitions organised by the Regional Directorate for Culture in recent years.
The following books, among many other works, will be on sale: the volumes of the Inventory of the Azores Building Heritage about Graciosa, Ribeira Grande, Nordeste and Calheta, the minutes of the meeting "Os Açores, a I Guerra Mundial e a República Portuguesa no contexto internacional" and the Colloquium on Hintze Ribeiro (1849-1907), and the winner of the first edition of "Daniel de Sá" Humanities Prize titled "Mau tempo e má sorte: contos pouco exemplares" by Leonor Sampaio.
The Azores Culture Pavilion of the 86th Lisbon Book Fair may be visited from Monday to Friday and on holiday eves from 12:30 PM to 12 AM, Saturdays from 11 AM to 12 AM and Sundays and holidays from 11 AM to 11 PM.
The pavilion is operated by a technician from the Regional Directorate for Culture with the collaboration of four young Azorean students.
