The Azores, through the regional secretariats for Education and Culture and Energy, Environment and Tourism, will participate in the 87th Lisbon Book Fair, from today until June 18. The initiative is sponsored by Portuguese Association of Publishers and Bookseller and will take place at Eduardo VII Park.
In order to promote works by Azorean authors or that address Azorean themes, the Azores Cultural Pavilion will feature the following entities: Regional Directorate for Culture, Amigos dos Açores − Ecological Association, Montanheiros Association, Azorina - Society for Environmental Management and Nature Conservation, Horta and Angra do Heroísmo City Halls, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Velas and Corvo Town Halls, Regional Centre for Handicrafts, Companhia das Ilhas, Geotrota - Consultancy in Geosciences, Azorean Institute of Culture, Cultural Institute of Ponta Delgada, Historical Institute of Terceira Island, Jorge Barros, Produções Audiovisuais, Horta Cultural Centre, Azores Sea Observatory, Publiçor, Afonso Chaves Society, Turiscom, Azores Tourism, University of the Azores, Ver Açor and Yolanda Corsépius.
In this pavilion, the more than 700 books available this year may be purchased at a discount of 30% in the case of publications of the Regional Directorate for Culture, while the remaining publications will have a discount of 20%.
In addition to this significant decrease in the public sale price, the Azores Culture Pavilion will select the "Book of the Day" on a daily basis as well as a book on sale; both have a 50% discount.
The "Book of the Day" and the Fair promotions will be extended to the shops of the Regional Directorate for Culture, the museums of the Regional Network of Azorean Museums, Public Libraries and Regional Archives of Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada, Horta as well as to Arquipélago -Contemporary Arts Centre and the virtual library.
The selected works for "Book of the Day" are as follows: the most recent edition of "Emanuel Félix - Obra Completa" (three volumes), the albums "Palácio dos Capitães-Generais" and "A fotografia nos Açores" and the catalogues "Pontos Colaterais – Coleção de Arte Contemporânea Arquipélago,” "Uma Seleção, Paulo Gouveia: A Reinvenção do Vernáculo," "Natália Correia: A Feiticeira Cotovia" and "Ana Vieira: Muros de Abrigo/Shelter Walls.” These catalogues revisit some of the most relevant exhibitions organised by the Regional Directorate for Culture in recent years.
In addition to the sale of books with significant discounts, the Azores Culture Pavilion also promotes, under the cultural programming for this year, book launch sessions and autograph sessions. On June 16, it will host the presentation of the third volume of "Obras Completas de Maria Olímpia da Rocha Gil, Os Açores e o Atlântico.Estudos de História Económica (Séculos XV-XVII)" at 9:30 PM.
The work is a new edition of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, with introductory note by Artur Teodoro de Matos.
Inês Amorim will present this work at a session that will be attended by the Regional Secretary for Education and Culture, Avelino Meneses, and the Coordinator of the Publication, Artur Teodoro de Matos.
In addition to this presentation, the book "Terra Nostra – Terra Sonhada" by Madalena San-Bento will presented by Manuel Freire on June 3 at 7 PM.
On June 14 and 15, there will be two autograph sessions with authors Luiz Fagundes Duarte (Retratos Imperfeitos) and Carlos Alberto Machado (Novas Histórias Açorianas), always at 6 PM.
On June 16, the book entitled "O Amanhã não Existe" by Urbano Bettencourt will be launched at 8:30 PM, while, on the following day, there will be an autograph session with Ana Paula Martins Goulart at 6 PM.
The "Açores Culture" Pavilion at the 87th Lisbon Book Fair may be visited from Monday to Thursday from 12:30 PM to 11 PM; Fridays from 12:30 PM to 12 AM; Saturdays from 11 AM to 12 AM; Sundays, holidays and on June 1, 13 and 15 from 11 AM to 11 PM.
Its operation is ensured by technicians of the Regional Directorate for Culture with the collaboration of eight young Azorean students.
