Carlos Machado Museum awarded Ibero-American Prize for Museums

The Carlos Machado Museum in Ponta Delgada was awarded the second place in the category of implemented and ongoing projects by the Ibermuseus Programme under the 6th Ibero-American Education Prize for Museums. The decision was taken Thursday in Brasilia, Brazil.

"The Mobile Museum in Sete Cidades - A project in progress" was distinguished among 147 applications for its action in the field, which reiterates the central role of museums and cultural heritage in the development process of the social reality between the communities where the project is being implemented.

The Ibermuseus Programme aims to contribute to the dialogue between public and private sectors within the Ibero-American Network of Museums, made up of 22 countries of the Ibero-American community, as well as to stimulate the adoption of social development policies through culture and heritage.

With this award, the Carlos Machado Museum reasserts itself as a place of confluence of experiences where the dynamics between the memory that preserves and the experiences of the communities where it operates stand as a pillar of its mission and manifesto. Likewise, it stimulates the education for culture and the duty of inclusion to preserve knowledge in the meeting of generations, which is reflected in the cultural, tangible and intangible heritage of São Miguel Island.

The Mobile Museum project is held in partnership with Cresaçor. It has covered the island of São Miguel and its action was mainly directed to the village of Sete Cidades in 2015.

The project is now recognised internationally as an exemplary initiative where different sources of knowledge converge: the Museum and its collections and the communities.

Moreover, it is also regarded as a participatory mechanism that contributes to local development through culture.´

Currently, this project continues to bring the cultural heritage preserved by the Carlos Machado Museum to several communities on the island of São Miguel. Next year, the museum's exhibition capacity will be expanded with the opening of Santo André Convent, which is being renovated.
