The Carlos Machado Museum promotes conference under the title "Volcanic Cavities on São Miguel Island - Importance for Conservation of Nature" next Tuesday, July 28. The event marks the National Day for Conservation of Nature.
The conference, which will be delivered by Diogo Caetano, president of the Ecological Association - Amigos dos Açores, will take place at Santa Bárbara Church in Ponta Delgada at 6:15 PM.
Volcanic cavities that the island on São Miguel Island are a typical feature of basaltic volcanism, corresponding to lava tubes, structures of horizontal development , and "algares" (caves), structures of vertical development. According to Diogo Caetano, these structures harbour "a vast natural and cultural heritage, being also an environmental, educational and recreational resource."
During the conference, held under the temporary exhibition "Nature in Dialogue," the speaker will also address the major economic aspects of volcanic cavities well as their use and enjoyment, focusing on the importance of their conservation. Admittance is free.
