The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Carlos Machado Museum, promotes the opening of the sculpture entitled "The Origin of the World" by plastic artist Miguel Palma at Santo André Centre next Friday, October 26, at 5:30 PM. The work will be open to the public until March 3, 2019.
According to the author, "The origin of the world" was created "in recent months, based on the idea of a waterfall. In 2013, I drew a waterfall very similar to this with the exception of a video system, which seemed fundamental to me at the time."
This sculpture, which carries water inside, "reminds us of the abundance of water the Island offers. In a transparent and closed system, the water circulates through a series of laboratory apparatuses, also transparent. This piece is a system that replicates nature," says the artist.
Miguel Palma was born in 1964 in Lisbon, where he currently lives and works. He has exhibited on regular basis since the late 1980s. In the 1990s, he became one of the most innovative Portuguese artists. His sculptural art journey is marked by installations produced in a non-traditional manner.
Working regularly in teams that include engineers, mechanics, carpenters and biologists, among other experts, Miguel Palma's creations have been orientated in a hybrid direction linked to 20th century industrial production.
The artist's work often addresses how technology has influenced the life of modern human beings, their relationship with the environment, the idea of human comfort or even the idea of power.
In addition to the construction of large and medium-scale installations, Miguel Palma often designs and creates miniatures of his projects. These works are simultaneously a record of his most intuitive work process and objects of aesthetic pleasure.
Miguel Palma has also created videos, books and performances. He has regularly participated in international art residencies since 2007.
