The Government of the Azores will subsidise several restoration interventions in paintings, sculptures and altarpieces in churches on the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in the amount of 90,000 Euros.
This governmental support corresponds to 50% of the restoration costs, being integrated in the contract-programmes published in the Official Journal on Thursday which were signed between the Regional Directorate of Culture and the entities owning those assets.
On the island of São Miguel, the Government awarded a subsidy in the amount of 39,000 Euros to the “Santa Casa da Misericórdia” of Ribeira Grande to support the conservation and restoration costs of the triumphal arch and two side altarpieces of the São Francisco Church.
In the case of Terceira, the Government will award a financial support of 31,581 Euros to the conservation and restoration of the altarpieces of Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Conception and the Sacred Heart of Jesus in addition to restoration of the polychromed wooden ceiling of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Santo António do Porto Judeu Church.
The published contracts also include the allocation of subsidies to the Vestry Board of the Angra do Heroísmo Cathedral for the conservation and restoration of paintings on canvas depicting Saint Anthony, Saint Francis of Assisi, Our Lady of the Rosary, Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine, Saint Martin, Saint Augustine and the Portrait of a Cardinal. Moreover, this support will also comprise the Recreio dos Lavradores
Philharmonic Society for the restoration of a sculpture depicting Our Lady of the Rosary, the patron saint of that society which is displayed at the Ribeirinha Church.
