Government moves forward with classification of buildings on the islands of Terceira, Graciosa and Faial
The Government of the Azores has determined the opening of the procedures for the classification of more than twenty buildings located on the islands of Terceira, Graciosa and Faial as monuments of public interest, according to the announcements published today in the Official Journal.
In the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, the procedures will comprise the Salga House in the village of Vila de São Sebastião, Quinta das Bicas (estate) and Vila Maria (country house) in the village of São Pedro, and Quinta do Carvão in the village of S. Mateus. In the municipality of Praia da Vitória, the buildings covered by the classification process are the Torre Mirante (tower) located in Caminho do Recanto in the village of Cabo da Praia as well as a rural house, a traditional barn and a cistern in the village of Fontinhas. It will also include another rural house located in Caminho do Concelho, village of Biscoitos.
On the island of Graciosa, the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, moves forward with the classification of a manor house that belonged to the Espínola family, a house located at Rua Marquês de Pombal, the Jewish Cemetery and the Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Church. All properties are located in Vila de Santa Cruz. In the village of São Mateus, besides the Matriz church, the Government has initiated a classification procedure for a house located at Rua Dr. Brito de Albuquerque. Moreover, this process will comprise fountains, cisterns, aqueducts and several washing places located on the island of Graciosa.
With regard to Faial Island, the procedures for the classification of monuments of public interest include Calçada da Conceição (cobblestone pavement) and Mirantes (towers), Lacerda Manor House and Florêncio Terra Garden; all properties are located in the village of Conceição. In turn, a house located at Alameda Barão de Roches, the old building where the Bank of Portugal was installed and the Infante Guesthouse are the proposed monuments in the village of Matriz. Furthermore, the process also comprises some buildings located in the village of Angústias, namely the Cedar's House, the Customs building, the Sousa e Silva House and the Garages owned by the Regional Port Authorities.
A property under classification and those located within the protection zone, 50 metres from its external limits, as determined by Law no.107/2001 of September 8, are comprised by the provisions of the Regional Legislative Decree no. 3/2015 of February 4.
Interested parties may submit their opinion on the classification procedures now in progress in writing and within a period of 30 days. They may include all facts and elements that may lead to a fair and rapid decision regarding these processes.
All elements are available for consultation by prior appointment at the Regional Directorate for Culture, Silveira e Paulo Palace, at Rua da Conceição in Angra do Heroísmo every working day, during office hours.
