The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Horta Museum, opens the exhibition marking the centenary of the First North Transatlantic Flight on Monday, April 8, at 2 PM.
This exhibition evokes the first transatlantic flight, highlighting the crossing of the North Atlantic by the US Navy's seaplane NC-4 (Navy Curtiss). As part of a three-seaplane squadron, also including seaplanes NC1 and NC3, it was the only aircraft to successfully finish the flight.
The seaplane NC4 started the flight at the Rockaway Beach naval base in New York on May 8, 1919 and landed at Plymouth, Southwest England, on May 31, 1919.
In this long air crossing of the North Atlantic, NC-4, after leaving Trepassey Bay in Newfoundland, Canada, on May 16, 1919 landed at Horta bay on May 17 at 1:23 PM, skirting the north coast of Faial Island. After the flight, this Azorean port became an important stopover for international seaplane flights.
The exhibition may be visited from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 AM and 5:30 PM.
