The Pico Museum hosts the 1st Azores Birdwatching Arts Festival, a project promoted by MiratecArts that celebrates bird watching through various artistic and cultural activities taking place during the month of November on this island.
The first edition starts with the opening of a photography exhibition "Birds by Pedro Silva" at the Whaling Museum in Lajes do Pico on November 6 at 9 PM. It will be followed by a conference to be delivered by Ricardo Ceia, member of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SDEA), who will address the theme "15 years of work for the conservation of birds in the Azores."
Pico-born photographer Pedro Silva will also lead a bird-watching expedition with the purpose of photographing them. The registration period is open to participants.
On November 7, the Whaling Museum will screen the film "The Ornithologist" by João Pedro Rodrigues at 9 PM. It tells the story of a solitary ornithologist swallowed by rapids when he was going down a lost river in north of Portugal in search of black storks, an endangered species.
This film was the recipient of more than 30 national and international nominations and awards, including Best Director at the Locarno Film Festival in 2016, Best Film at the Grand Prix Chéries-Chéris 2016, and a special mention at the Denver International Film Festival.
