Regional Director for Sport delivers trophies at 15th Azorean Sports Gala on Terceira Island
The Regional Director for Sport will deliver the trophies awarded to personalities, organisations and athletes from Terceira at the 15th Azorean Sports Gala in Praia da Vitória.
At the ceremony, which takes place at Terceira Youth and Arts Academy, António Gomes will deliver the "Media" award in the "Media Bodies" category to "Diário Insular” newspaper and in the "Journalist" category to Mateus Rocha, collaborator with this newspaper.
Gerardo Louro da Rosa and João Paulo Teixeira Rocha will be distinguished in the "Personalities" category for their 20 years as leaders of the automotive section of Terceira Automobile Club, and João da Silva Guiod de Castro, who celebrates his 20th years as karate coach at several clubs.
In turn, the trophy in the category "National Results and Scores and International Participations - Individual Sports" will be delivered to Sara Isabel Santos Martins, an athlete of Terceira Equestrian Centre who ranked 1st in the Portugal Education - Youth Championship.
Luís Miguel Pimentel will be distinguished in the same category, but in adapted sports. An athlete of the Youth Christian Association, he ranked first in the Portugal ANDDI Championship - Athletics in 600 metre Long Jump. He also won the National Individual ANDDI Championship - Athletics in 300 metres dash, javelin 400 g and 1,000 meters in men's seniors.
In collective sports, the Fonte do Bastardo Youth Association will be distinguished for its second place in the National Volleyball Championship - Premier League as well as for its participation in the Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men. Moreover, the Terceira Outdoor Club and Terceira Golf Club will be also distinguished at this Gala. The first club ranked 1st in the National Canoeing Championship in surfsk1- men's seniors, while the second ranked 2nd in the National Senior Clubs Championship as well as in the National Mid-Amateus Clubs Championship in men's seniors.
Furthermore, the Azorean Sports Gala will also award the Sports Group of Juncal Social Centre for the results achieved in several competitions: 1st place in National Table Tennis Championship - teams in beginners - men; 1 st place in the National Pairs Championship in juniors - women; 3rd place in the National Premier League Teams Championships in women's and men's seniors. This club also participated in the European Cup (ETTU Cup) in men's seniors.
As for "National Teams," the athletes awarded under this category belong to the Azores Sports Academy in Kickboxing: Frederico Ornelas Ferreira, who represented the national team in the light contact at the World Championship held in Dublin in -74 kg category, men's seniors; Sérgio Sousa da Silva, who joined the national team in point fighting at the European Championship held in San Sebastian in the -45 kg category, beginners-men.
Also in this category, the event also awards the athletes of the Sports Group of Juncal Social Centre in Table Tennis: Ana Rita Costa and Vitória Ramalho Soares, who represented the national team at the 22nd Open Portugal - Youth in the age group of cadets; Patrícia Aguiar Maciel and Raquel Vieira Andrade, who participated in the International Opens that took place in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Funchal and the Czech Republic as well as in the European Youth Championship, held in Bratislava, juniors - women.
In turn, athletes of the Youth Christian Association Ana Margarida Filipe, beginners - women, Carlos Manuel Cota Lima, men's seniors, and Maria Inês Cota Sousa, juniors - women, willreceive prizes in the "National Teams" category in adapted sports. They represented the national Athletics team in the European Indoor Track Championship that took place in St. Petersburg and in the INAS Global Games, held in Ecuador.
Ana Filipe also took part in the European Youth Paralympics in Croatia and Carlos Lima participated in the World CPI Championship in Qatar at the service of the national team.
The Azorean Sports Gala aims to pay tribute and distinguish sports agents, school sport entities and sports associations that distinguished themselves last year for the results and scores achieved as well as for their the contribution they have provided to the development of regional sport, which is acknowledged by the Regional Government.
For this purpose, the Government implemented a decentralised model for the delivery of trophies to bring the population, namely supporters of athletes, closer to clubs, sports and agents.
