Avelino Meneses defends that history of education in the Azores is marked by "progress"
The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated today at the Legislative Assembly in Horta that the history of education in the Azores, like the Autonomy of 40 years, is marked by progress."
"The history of our Autonomy of 40 years is a history of progress, but it is also a history of progress in education, with more schools and teachers, above all, with more literate citizens," stressed Avelino Meneses.
The Secretary for Education acknowledged the existence of "difficulties" and "negative" indicators, but for a reason, also easy to discover, we have departed from the lowest levels."
Avelino Meneses also rejected the non-existence of a "path" for education, adding that "we have been following a path since the 2014/2015 school year, which ProSucesso - Azores for Education."
"This is an intervention plan for the long term as transformations in education are fortunately irreversible, but take their time," stressed the government official.
In this context, he considered that ProSucesso will yield the "expected" results from 2026 onwards, but there are already some "positive indicators" with a four-year advance; the goals outlined for 2020-2021 have been reached.
According to the Regional Secretary for Education, the path "moves forward and the indicators are clearly encouraging."
Avelino Meneses also expressed the desire to discuss education at the Parliament "to create a pact for education or, at least, to reach an understanding."
