The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated in Ponta Delgada that there are possibilities of giving "greater emphasis" to the teaching of Portuguese language in Bermuda's public schools.
Avelino Meneses spoke at the end of a meeting with the Minister of Social Development and Sport of Bermuda, Michael Weeks, stressing that Portuguese is the language, after English, is a widely spoken language in that territory.
For the Regional Secretary, this visit by Minister Michael Weeks to Portugal, including the Azores, contributes to "closer relations" between two peoples that "have something in common," as Bermuda has long hosted a large community of Azorean emigrants, mostly from S. Miguel.
Minister Michael Weeks heads a Bermuda delegation that will be visiting the Azores until Wednesday under the labour relations established between the Ponta Delgada Football Association, the Bermuda Football Federation and other sports agentes.
