Azorean schools provided with regional resources on the Centennial of the Portuguese Republic

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training delivered the Educational kit – Centennial of the Republic to schools on Friday morning.

At the delivery ceremony of these teaching resources sets, which were produced locally, Cláudia Cardoso stressed the fact that this kit is “an exclusive regional production, which evidences the huge effort on the part of teachers who, despite being occupied with their classes every day, still manage to have time, dedication and skills to create this kit that will enhance their knowledge about the republican ideals in the context of their classes.”

Speaking before an audience of students and teachers, the Regional Secretary for Education and Training stressed that this work was the result of a “team effort” which is essential nowadays because together we are than just one person; we can do more.”

Now, the Secretary said, “it is up to you, students, to ask and demand from your teachers that this type of resources be used to your benefit.”

Cláudia Cardoso reminded students that “the moment you are living and studying is quite different from the time when I and other people here studied,” today there are more tools and resources available, which “you must use conscientiously in the enhancement of your knowledge on a daily basis.”

The Secretary for Education also stressed that “in the present moment, knowledge is the only assurance we have and that no one can it from us. Regardless of the crisis, the austerity measures, our knowledge, skills and what are able to achieve through this knowledge is priceless,” providing each person with “a safe tool in the strengthening of our path.”

The Kit includes various resources, such as the Republic Game, developed by the Regional Directorate for Education and Training, and it is addressed at all school levels. The game contains over a thousand questions about the republic and it is divided into four themes: Facts and Figures, Ideals and Values, Literature, Arts and Press and finally, Lifestyle and Sports.

The interactive contents also includes another DVD under the title “Actividades Educativas” (Educational Activities) which contains several virtual puzzles, memory games the film “O quotidiano República” (The Republica daily newspaper).

The DVDs “Um Idealista Chamado Manuel de Arriaga” (An Idealist Named Manuel de Arriaga), “Exposições” (Exhibitions) and “A República 100 anos depois” (The Republic, 100 later) are also included in the Education Kit.

In addition, the Kit also integrates the CD “Uma Lição de Música – CD de Canções Infantis de Tomás Borba (A Music Lesson – Children’s songs by Tomás Borba) performed by the Youth Choir of the Terceira Musical Academy and the students from the Artistic Education department at the Praia da Vitória Basic Education School as well as a timeline containing the most relevant regional and national personalities and facts between 1910 and 1926.

The Educational Kit, developed in partnership with the Regional Directorate for Culture, will be delivered to all regional schools next week.
