Azorean Anthem is consolidated and accepted by the majority of people, says Luiz Fagundes Duarte
The Regional Secretary for Education, Science and Culture said in Ponta Delgada that the Azorean Anthem "is not endangered." In fact, "it is consolidated and is accepted by the majority of people."
Luís Duarte Fagundes stated that the Azores' Anthem "cannot be changed and should not be questioned by anyone since this decision was taken by the Region's self-government bodies at the right time."
Speaking at the end of a hearing at the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, Environment and Labour at the Regional Legislative Assembly, the Regional Secretary defended that the symbol of Autonomy "should be disseminated at schools. It is important that pass on to children the knowledge on the anthem's music and lyrics."
"The music was composed by a philharmonic band musician in the 19th century and the lyrics are based on a poem by Natália Correia, which was specifically written to become the lyrics of the Azorean Anthem," stressed the Regional Secretary.
As Luiz Fagundes Duarte revealed, the Student Statute and the Legal Document on the Management and Establishment of Schools within the Regional Educational System defends that students "should learn the anthem at school and that teachers should provide an explanation on the anthem's lyrics and music."
The Regional Secretary for Education, Science and Culture said the Regional Government is doing everything within its reach to implement "the provisions of this legal document at schools" with the aim of making students acquainted with "the anthem's symbolism and the heraldic symbols of the Azores.
