The Regional Secretary for Culture and Education conveyed his belief that the Azores, with the implementation of the programme for the promotion of school success - ProSucesso, will achieve their goals and "society will improve, which is the goal of politics."
Speaking Friday at the closing session of the seminar "Humanise society," organised by the Cáritas - Azores, Avelino Meneses defended that this goal will only be achieved "if all families regard education as a clear priority and if all students bring their future from school, without ever leaving it in the school."
In order to give "opportunity for all students on equal terms," the Regional Secretary for Education stressed the importance of having a School Welfare system so that "each student may benefit from material conditions for the full use of their intellectual abilities."
In his speech, Avelino Meneses also highlighted the school's role as "the cradle of citizenship" and development "as a path" to achieve progress. Moreover, the government official emphasised the tasks carried out by the institutions that were freely created by citizens to promote social solidarity.
"The institutions of a democratic government and the rule of law should underpin the harmonisation between progress and justice. Schools and governments are among these institutions," said the government official.
According to Avelino Meneses, the school is crucial because training is what "best reconciles" economic development and social advancement in order to become "the pillar of humanism."
The Government plays a "determinant regulatory role" in order to ensure that "competitiveness becomes a factor of progress without being a tool of disrespect for the human condition" and that "solidarity becomes a factor of justice without being a tool of paralysing inactivity."
