The Court of Auditors - Azores Section has already authorised the contract work for the renewal of Capelas Basic Education School building on the island of São Miguel.
The awarding of the contract work and the beginning of the works will take place within a maximum period of 30 days after the assessment and approval of the Safety and Health Plan, which will be now submitted by the contractor.
This intervention in Capelas Basic Education School is aimed at the renewal of the existing building located within the school complex with capacity for 800 students. Moreover, it will also reinforce its capacity with the construction of new buildings, which will increase the number of classrooms. After the works, the school will have 33 regular and two small classrooms.
The work was awarded to the company Marques, S.A. and has a base price of 7.4 million Euros. It also includes the creation of new classrooms for specific subjects, such as Visual and Technological Education, two Science labs and Physics and Chemistry laboratory.
With an estimated completion period of 24 months, the intervention will also restructure some of the existing areas, such as the kitchen and the library, giving them more space and better functional conditions. It also provides for the creation of Special Education Centre, new work areas and socialisation spaces for students, teachers and non-teaching staff.
Moreover, the project includes the improvement of the existing sports areas, with the creation of a gymnastics room, the construction of areas designed for school administration and management as well as the creation of an accessible covered path throughout the school, connecting all buildings.
