Creation of Lajes Base Interpretation Centre can move forward, says Avelino Meneses
The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated at the Legislative Assembly in Horta that the conditions are met for the creation of the Lajes Base Interpretation Centre.
“There are plenty of oral and written sources and material evidence that are vital to the creation of an Interpretation Centre at Lajes Base, said Avelino Meneses. According to him, this centre will have to be “a space dedicated to recognition, dissemination and reflection on the community's heritage and a starting point for the knowledge of the island and of the archipelago," besides being "an asset" to the development of the tourism and the revitalisation of the economy.
For these reasons, added the Regional Secretary, "everything is favourable" to the creation "installing or coordinating committee, “which may include representatives of the Regional Government, the University of the Azores and the Terceira Historical Institute.
This committee will be responsible for defining a programme and selecting partners such as, for example, the Portuguese Air Force, considering “the need to include the information already collected and compiled on the history and missions of Lajes Base,” stressed the government official.
Avelino Meneses recalled that the history of the Lajes Base “largely coincides” with the participation of the Azores in the “history of transatlantic aviation that begins at the end of World War I.”
