New schools are “safe investment”

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training stated this morning that “each new school opened by the Regional Government is a safe investment.”

Cláudia Cardoso spoke at the opening of the Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School that was built in the village of São Sebastião, Terceira.

The Regional Secretary for Education and Training noted that with this project, the government “promoting to two fundamental principles: equal access to education and educational success.”

Recalling the opening of the Ponta Garça Basic Education School on the island of São Miguel last Saturday, Cláudia Cardoso stressed that “at a time when the National Government is stopping all works in progress in Mainland Portugal, the Regional Government opens two major works two days apart,” such as the case of these two “new schools that have put the Azores in first place regarding school buildings.”

Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education, opened today, will “allow students to pursue their education from preschool to the 9th form at the same school, assuring a proximity policy to maintain the population in its respective villages” said the government official.

This school, which represents a 13 million Euro investment, will thus ensure “an integrated education by promoting learning, excellence and the principle of equality,” added Cláudia Cardoso.

The Francisco Ferreira Drummond Basic Education School has a capacity for 700 students and it is equipped with the most diverse infrastructures, such as a library, an auditorium with capacity for 125 people, break rooms for students and teachers, a stationary shop, a medical office, a social worker office, a psychology office, a copy room, rooms to receive parents, support offices, leisure areas as well as a quality sports complex equipped with a football field with synthetic grass and a sports hall with capacity for 250 spectators, which will serve the school and the community.
