The announcement was made to the media by the Regional Secretariat for Education and Training.
Cláudia Cardoso said that this investment of half a million Euros will be mainly addressed at elementary schools, as the Regional Secretariat considers that computers are an indispensable tool for students, who should start using them as soon as possible at Azorean schools.
The Regional Secretary for Education stressed that this investment will replace the purchase of “Magalhães” laptops as "the Regional Government intends that computers become part of the school and not of students, contrary to the policies developed at the time of the Magalhães laptops."
The computers to be purchased “will become school property. They belong to the school and will be only used by students in a school context,” added Cláudia Cardoso.
For the Regional Secretary for Education “it is more important to purchase computers for schools, which may used by students in a school context, than for students as a single computer may serve a greater number of students.”
Cláudia Cardoso stressed, however, that “the Magalhães laptops will continue to be used and many of them are still currently in use. The computer we want to purchase from now on is also a laptop, but in this case the school is the owner of the equipment, making it available to more than one student and not just to one student, as it happened until now.”
