Secretary of Education considered the 478 years of History of the city of Angra do Heroísmo as "outstanding"
The Regional Secretary for Education and Training, Cláudia Cardoso, considered the 478 years of history of the city of Angra do Heroísmo as truly "outstanding."
Speaking on behalf of the President of the Government at the solemn session to celebrate the anniversary of the oldest Azorean city on Tuesday night, the government official also mentioned that the classification of Angra do Heroísmo's historic centre as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1983 was a hallmark in the city's history.
History is not limited to "important dates," Cláudia Cardoso acknowledged, adding that the case of Angra do Heroísmo is "unique" and "there are few cities in the world with a glorious past" as that of Angra.
Bearing in mind the importance of the path followed by this city throughout history, the Regional Secretary for Education and Training said that "we feel great pride in belonging to this municipality; we are proud of putting our roots down in a city we have chosen as the place" to live.
The government official defended that "those in charge of the city's government have the supreme responsibility of honouring its unique history,” adding that "history will always remember those who have put the interests of Angra do Heroísmo ahead of theirs" as "the city's importance cannot be overshadowed by any political, party or personal interest."
For Cláudia Cardoso, Angra do Heroísmo, as living organisms, "breathes, grows, develops and must continue to do so more than ever." This city must continue “to fight against external and internal adversities that might jeopardise its path towards the future."
"Therefore, I wish that the event we celebrate today does not become a simple celebration of a milestone," concluded the Regional Secretary for Education and Training. The government official wished on behalf of the Regional Government that "the union, which is not synonymous with unanimity, persists in the arduous and noble aspiration of making Angra do Heroísmo a better place to live."
