Students from Calheta de São Jorge awarded first prize in school competition “Europe in the World”
The Calheta Basic Education and Secondary School in Calheta, São Jorge Island, was distinguished with the first place in the school competition “Europe in the World,” an initiative of the European Commission representation in Portugal and the Jacques Delors European Information Centre, which was organised by the Portuguese Association for Creativity and Innovation – APGICO.
The nine-year old students, Mariana Seabra and Mariana Pereira, have been selected as finalists of level A (elementary school level) with a work developed in the “Arts” category, having submitted a painting made up of different materials which the contained the inscription “A Europa está connosco e nós com a Europa” (Europe is with us and we are with Europe).
The two students from the Calheta Basic Education and Secondary School, the only Azorean school to be selected for the final stage of the competition “Europe and the World,” travelled to Lisbon this weekend with the support of the Regional Government, being accompanied by teacher Sandra Goulart, to participate in the national final, whose ceremony included the presentation of the selected projects and the delivery of prizes.
The final was also disputed by the Basic Education Schools of Lombada – Ponta do Sol (Madeira) and Almancil (Algarve) in a competition which intended to develop an original work in the following categories – Arts, Multimedia, Literature and Web – by promoting creativity, talent and knowledge about the European Union amongst students.
