The Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs has decided to extend the SOS Corey's Shearwater campaign, annually held from October 15 to November 15, due to the late departure of juveniles from the nests.
"Although 2017 is a year with a relatively low number of rescues, occurrences of bird falls continue to be reported by Island Natural Parks, which means that some specimens may still be in their nests," said the Regional Director for Sea Affairs.
As Filipe Porteiro revealed, "1,931 juvenile specimens have been saved so far" in the Azores.
The Regional Director highlighted "the increasing involvement of the Azorean population" in the SOS Corey's Shearwater Campaign, considering that this initiative is "one of the most important actions towards nature conservation" taking place throughout the archipelago.
