The Regional Under Secretary of Fishing and a delegation of Flores fishers attended the small scale model testing of the recommended solution for the expansion of Poças port on the island of Flores that took place at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory yesterday.
In these tests fishers approved the port's entry and exit conditions as well as the shelter conditions provided by this intervention in case of bad weather.
The expansion works of Poças port include the construction of 302 metre breakwater and a 104 inner breakwater to provide good shelter conditions inside the port basin, which will have a 15,000 m2 area and a levelled ground area of 8,000 m2. These interventions also include the construction of a pier and floating pontoons with capacity for 88 vessels.
With the adoption of a policy to strengthen the maritime economy, the Government continues to pursue the reform of the regional network of ports in order to provide port areas with better conditions to support Azorean fishing communities and the development of tourism maritime activities and recreational boating.
