In the context of a joint mission with the National Republican Guard, the Regional Inspectorate of Fisheries seized in the early hours of Tuesday about 330 kilos of horse mackerel caught illegally by a vessel that had already exceeded the catch limit permitted by law for this species.
The seizure took place as part of an inspection action conducted at Vila Franca do Campo and Água de Pau fishing ports with the aim of preventing illegal sale attempts.
It should be noted that vessels operating on São Miguel are authorised to catch a maximum daily limit of 400 kilos of horse mackerel from Monday to Friday to be sold in auction.
The amendment introduced to the ordinance regulating the limits stipulated for daily catches of horse mackerel on São Miguel Island was published in January this year with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of this resource and boost the income of fishers.
According to the legislation in force, the fish seized will be sold in auction. The Region will retain the proceeds of the sale until a decision is made regarding this situation.
