Azores to carry out internal management of the splendid alfonsino and alfonsino quota
The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology welcomed today the allocation of the national splendid alfonsino and alfonsino quota across Mainland Portugal and the Azores, stressing that "it allows the Region to manage its quota internally."
An ordinance published today in the Official Gazette establishes a key for sharing the splendid alfonsino and alfonsino quota for the fleet registered in Mainland Portugal as well as for the fleet registered in the Azores; the latter now holds 85% of the total national quota.
Gui Menezes stressed that this measure will allow "a more efficient management of the quota allocated to the Region for this species." It will be followed by the "preparation of a proposal for quota management at regional level and the discussion with the sector" in order to render "this resource as profitable as possible."
The Regional Secretary also stressed that "the Azores are responsible for the management of 55% of the European splendid alfonsino and alfonsino quota.
The proposal to allocate quota for this species between Mainland Portugal and the Azores was presented by the Regional Secretary to the Minister of the Sea at a meeting held in Lisbon in the end of January.
