Coastal protection and redevelopment works in Rabo de Peixe to be completed before the end of 2018, says Gui Menezes
The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stated in Rabo de Peixe that the protection and redevelopment work for São Miguel's northern coast, currently underway, "should be completed in December 2018 and may be sooner if weather conditions are favourable."
According to Gui Menezes, the work is in progress "at a good pace," especially "the maritime component that is always the most complicated," after being partially halted due to adverse maritime conditions between January and March.
The Regional Secretary spoke during a visit to the works taking place near Rua de São Sebastião, village of Rabo de Peixe. According to him, this 3.3 million-Euro investment represents the fulfilment of a commitment made by the Azorean Government," taking into account the dangers posed by that area.
"This is an area where the coastline is rapidly retreating due to the action of the sea and rain falls, jeopardising the safety of people and property," Gui Menezes said, adding that this is also "a housing area of significant size."
"The works on the cliff are already concluded," the government official said, noting that the "waterproofing interventions have already been carried out in an area of about 2 thousand square meters" in order to reduce erosion.
The work in progress will create a maritime protection at the base of the cliff, covering an extension of about 400 meters through a platform filled with large rocks.
The intervention also includes the construction of a spillway for the drainage of rainwater.
It should be noted that this is an area of great instability in geological terms and, as a preventive measure, roadblocks will be placed to prevent the parking of vehicles on Rua de São Sebastião.
