Fausto Brito de Abreu supported by the National Government in the negotiations of fishing quotas in Brussels
The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology emphasised the position taken by the Secretary of State of the Sea, Pinto de Abreu, who will support the negotiations between the Azorean Government and the European Commission to increase fishing quotas for some species.
"We have agreed to undertake joint efforts in order to achieve this goal." In this context, "the Government of the Azores will collect all scientific information available in the Region to support this claim," stated Fausto Brito de Abreu after a working meeting with the Secretary of State of the Sea.
In addition to debating the themes discussed at the Regional Fisheries Council, an event that gathered the industry representatives on Terceira last week, it was also agreed to develop a "joint strategy to raise the awareness of the European Commission for the specificities of Azorean fisheries."
"Fishing activities are usually carried out by a traditional fleet that uses sustainable fishing techniques," said the Regional Secretary.
In another meeting held with the Minister of Agriculture and the Sea, Fausto Brito e Abreu discussed with Assunção Cristas the macro-policies set by the Azores for the development of the so-called Maritime Economy as well as the relevant role played by Science and Technology in ensuring its success, especially in the area of agriculture.
"I have also conveyed the Regional Government's commitment to participate in the regulatory process concerning the Framework Law on Maritime Spatial Planning," revealed the government official.
