Fausto Brito e Abreu highlights importance of new "management and planning" of Azorean fishing ports
The Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology stressed today the importance of the implementation of the new rules for the use of regional fishing ports. The government official spoke at the Lajes do Pico Port, where the Supplementary Rules for this fishing infrastructure were posted.
"The regulation of this fishing port, which enters into force today, will be an important tool for the management and planning of this port infrastructure," said Fausto Brito e Abreu.
The legal document containing the rules that will manage fishing ports was published following the discussion and approval by industry partners and the Regional Maritime Authorities. It embodies the commitment taken by the Regional Government to optimise the use of wetlands and land areas.
The Regional Secretary also revealed that, according to the commitment taken at the meeting held by the Regional Fisheries Council, he will visit the main fishing ports of the archipelago "until the end of the year."
Fausto Brito e Abreu also met with local shipowners and with the President of the Traditional Fishing Shipowners' Association of Pico. During the meeting, it was discussed, among other matters, the improvement of the unloading of fish at the ports where the vessel hauling system purchased by the Region is installed.
